Minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS) is an umbrella term for a group of surgical techniques that use small incisions, tubular retractors, the operating microscope and — for selected cases — the endoscope. The goal is to treat the problem effectively while minimising disruption to muscle and soft tissue.
How MISS differs from conventional surgery
Rather than a long open incision that detaches muscles, MISS uses small ports and specialised retractors to reach the spine through muscle planes. This can mean less blood loss, less post-operative pain and, in the right patient, a shorter hospital stay.
Conditions treated
MISS can be applied to selected herniated discs, lumbar canal stenosis, some cases of spondylolisthesis, and specific cervical disc problems. It is not appropriate for every condition — significant deformity or gross instability may need a conventional approach.
Techniques used
Depending on the diagnosis, techniques may include microscopic discectomy, endoscopic decompression, tubular decompression, and minimally invasive fusion where indicated. The exact combination is chosen after clinical review and MRI.
