What is endoscopic spine surgery?
In endoscopic spine surgery, the surgeon works through a portal roughly the size of a pencil, guided by a high-definition endoscopic camera. Because most surrounding muscle is spared, this approach can lead to smaller scars, reduced blood loss and, for the right patient, earlier mobilisation. It is well suited to certain herniated discs and cases of spinal canal narrowing.
Who may benefit
Endoscopic techniques are considered for selected patients with slipped disc, sciatica, lumbar canal stenosis and some cervical disc problems. However, endoscopic surgery is not the answer for everyone. Complex deformity, gross instability or extensive degeneration may need conventional or microscopic surgery. The correct choice is made only after a thorough clinical assessment and MRI review.
How the procedure is performed
The procedure is typically performed under regional or general anaesthesia. A small incision is made, an endoscopic portal is placed under X-ray guidance, and the compressed nerve is decompressed with specialised instruments while the surgeon watches on a HD monitor. Time in the operating room is usually one to two hours for a single-level procedure.
Recovery and outcomes
Many patients are able to sit up and walk within a few hours and are often discharged within 24 hours.
